Advanced Courses / Malachite

In deep green color, undulating bands and concentric circles characterize this semi-precious stone. Traditionally the stone has been used either as a skid material for objects d'art and jewelry settings or as avenger used in the manner of inlay.

Gem Malachite, painted to imitate the actual stone, is conceived as a solid material. The artist skillfully renders bands of different widths and tones, forming circles and ovals around the nodules.

Negative Malachite is inspired by the many Russian examples of malachite inlay. The art it conforms to the logic of nature, yet the rendering is done in a free and decorative manner. Malachite, mimicked in paint, appears to have been sliced in cross section.
