The Venetian Gesso Surface
Eighteenth-century Italian craftsman, seeking to emulate the French ébénistes, coated furniture with gesso to conceal inferior wood and faulty construction. This innovative surface proved remarkably receptive to water colors and inspired Venetian craftsmen to a level of artistry considered the apogee of decorative furniture. The Isabel O'Neil l craftsman uses casein paint in imitation of the gesso body, and build color upon color to create a uniquely interesting velvet-like mat surface

Florentine Finish
An elegant surface is created using casino paint as an antiquing medium applied over a Dutch metal gilded ground.
